Pressure and Vacuum Relief Vents

Pressure / Vacuum Conservation Vents are employed where it is necessary or desirable to reduce evaporation of tank contents to atmosphere. These vents are generally designated as the conservation type. They are typically mounted to a flange or pipe that connects to the vapor space (space within the tank that is above the liquid surface) of a storage tank. The pressure in this vapor space increases or decreases as liquid is pumped into or out of the tank, respectively. Atmospheric temperature changes cause an expansion or contraction of the vapors in this space, again resulting in pressure increases or decreases. These vents are factory set to your specifications so that the pallet assemblies in the housings open when specific pressure and vacuum levels are sensed. The set points for these vents are achieved either by weight loading or spring loading of the pallet assemblies, depending on the setting required. The tank's vapor space pressure/vacuum works in opposition to the force (weight or spring) applied to the pallet assemblies. Once the excess pressure or vacuum condition has been relieved, the pallet assemblies reseal automatically. The tank's vapor space is always maintained within the safe range of its pressure and vacuum operating design limits.
End-of-Line Vents (shown in drawing above) relieve pressure directly to the atmosphere. Pipe-Away and In-Line Vents are provided with flanged or threaded outlet connections so that vented vapors may be confined and directed through connecting piping for further processing.

EMERGENCY PRESSURE RELIEF VENTS

In addition to the normal venting capacity provided by Protectoseal's Pressure / Vacuum Relief Vents and/or Flame Arresters, every large above ground flammable liquid storage tank should be provided with some means of relieving excessive internal pressure caused by exposure of the tank to a fire. Depending upon the strength of the tank structure, a vent sized to handle the normal venting requirements (for day-to-day operations) may be inadequate to handle the abnormal vapor efflux generated by heat from an exposure fire.
When a fire occurs near a flammable liquid storage tank, heat transmitted through the tank wall to the contents will cause the liquid to vaporize readily. In the case of petroleum based products, this vaporization may amount to roughly 30 or more cubic feet of vapor for every gallon of solvent vaporized. This generates a relatively high pressure within the confined area of the tank's vapor space. In the absence of sufficient emergency relief a tank rupture could occur, with disastrous effect on life and property and the environment.
Explosions caused by such conditions may be readily avoided by providing adequate emergency relief vents which permit the vapors to escape from the tank. These emergency vents usually include pallet assemblies (as illustrated above) which are weighted to stay closed under normal pressure conditions and which open only when a predetermined pressure is attained, thus relieving the abnormal volume of vapor generated under the fire conditions described above.

PIN-TECH BUBBLE-TIGHT < 500 PPM PRESSURE RELIEF VENT

PIN-TECH BUBBLE-TIGHT < 500 PPM
PRESSURE RELIEF VENT

Series No. 56000

Series No. 56000, Bubble-Tight <500 ppm Pressure Relief Vents are designed
and tested to address concerns about the leakage of fugitive emissions prior
to set point, and parts per million (ppm) emission rates.
Protectoseal’s PIN-TECH vents are mounted to the vapor space flange connection of a storage tank or vessel. The vents utilize a unique technology that employs a buckling pin to hold the vent piston closed (Fig. 1) with zero leakage up to the relief set point. The pin is an accurately machined, straight metal rod. It is configured to precisely sense transmitted axial forces that are generated as a result of tank pressure. The force required to buckle the pin is governed by Euler’s Law and is a function of the pin’s metallurgy, length and diameter. An exact buckling force can be determined for any specific pin configuration. When the pressure in the tank reaches the vent set point, the axial force is sufficient to buckle the pin and the vent sealing piston is allowed to move to its full open, relieving position (Fig. 2). The pin buckles completely and instantaneously.

Environmental Regulations: Protectoseal's PIN-TECH vents provide a means of complying with the stringent VOC emission requirements mandated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) outlined in Code of Federal Regulations (40 CFR).

FLAME & DETONATION ARRESTERS

Flammable liquids are volatile in nature. As they evaporate, they may produce ignitable vapor/air mixtures. Such hazardous conditions are commonly encountered in chemical, petrochemical, petroleum and pharmaceutical plants where the storage, transfer and collection of flammable liquids are part of their daily operations.
Flame arresters and detonation arresters are passive, mechanical device installed on a storage tank nozzle or in a flammable vapor piping system. The arresters' functions are: (1) to allow the passage of vapor under normal operating conditions and (2) to stop and extinguish any flame front propagating through the flammable vapor/air mixture under emergency conditions. Stopping the flame protects the storage tank, or the equipment located in the piping system, from the catastrophic damage that may result from an uncontrolled ignition. A variety of arrester designs are available. The choice of a proper arrester depends on factors such as the location of the arrester with respect to the ignition source and the flammable properties of the vapor/air mixture.
END-OF-LINE flame arresterOne common flame arrester configuration is mounted at the end of a storage tank vent pipe and is identified as an "END-OF-LINE" flame arrester. This arrester permits normal tank breathing, while preventing the flashback of an unconfined deflagration (the ignition of the vapor cloud in the open atmosphere) from flashing back past the arrester into the piping and the tank's vapor space.
"VENT-LINE / IN-LINE flame arresters
Flame arresters are at times mounted directly upstream of pressure / vacuum relief vents, or are connected to short runs of open vent outlet piping. These devices, known as "VENT-LINE / IN-LINE" flame arresters are designed with flanged or threaded mounting connections on both the inlet and outlet. It is possible for a flammable vapor / air mixture to ignite within the confined space of the short outlet pipe or within the vent body. Such an ignition is referred to as a confined deflagration. The flame speed is slow and pressures within the vent piping are relatively low. The Vent-Line / In-Line Flame Arrester is designed to stop this type of flame front. Note: these arresters have very specific limitations as to where they can be properly located within the system.
DETONATION arrestersStrict enforcement of environmental pollution standards has had a dramatic impact on tank storage of flammable liquids. Rather than expelling vapors into the atmosphere, the trend has been toward the connecting or manifolding of multiple tanks through common piping to a central processing unit. These closed piping systems, or vapor recovery / collection systems, have created unique flammable vapor safety hazards. The piping runs in these vapor recovery systems tend to be longer and more complex. Potential sources of ignition may actually be present within the vapor collection system itself. An ignition within a piping system can result in a flame front that accelerates very rapidly and generates extremely high pressures. A low speed, low pressure confined deflagration can readily transition into a high speed, high pressure confined deflagration and then to a detonation, which is a flame front moving at the speed of sound in the vapor/air mixture. "DETONATION" arresters are specifically designed to stop and extinguish detonations, confined deflagrations and unconfined deflagrations. The limitations that are placed on the location of end-of-line and vent-line / in-line flame arresters with respect to the ignition source do not apply to detonation arresters.

TANK BLANKETING VALVES

Tank Blanketing Valves provide an effective means of preventing and controlling fires in flammable liquid storage tanks. Vapors cannot be ignited in the absence of an adequate supply of oxygen. In most instances, this oxygen is provided by air drawn into the tank from the atmosphere during tank emptying operations.
Tank Blanketing Valves are installed with their inlet connected to a supply of pressurized inert gas (usually Nitrogen), and their outlet piped into the tank's vapor space. When the tank pressure drops below a predetermined level, the blanketing valve opens and allows a flow of inert gas into the vapor space. The blanketing valve reseals when pressure in the tank has returned to an acceptable level. The blanketing gas contains no air. No supply of air (Oxygen) is allowed to enter the tank. The vapors, therefore, never form a flammable mixture.
Tank Blanketing Valves help maintain the vapor space in a non-flammable condition, and also provide make-up gas to insure that the tank's vapor space is not subjected to a vacuum.
